Sonia Dogra

Illustrated by Anisha Kotibhaskar & Bazma Ahmad

Seven-year-old Kuhu Joshi’s life in the hill town of Himalpur is a rollercoaster of challenges. From acing a school interview to getting past a demanding PT class; from preparing for a play audition to getting snubbed for her Pahadi accent—Kuhu learns to overcome daily hurdles. But when Ma becomes distant, she feels lost.

What causes Ma to change? Will Kuhu find a way to reconnect with her mother and overcome her struggles?

Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life reassures children that their problems count while reminding grown-ups that getting through childhood is no child’s play.

‘The easy narrative technique and the sympathetic depiction of the characters are pointers to the author’s poetic talent and her understanding of children. Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life is not just for middle-graders, it is for readers of all ages; for there is something for everyone in it. This is an excellent debut.’

Description

Sonia Dogra is a master juggler—an ex-English teacher turned freelance editor, writer, and mom. She was a content creator for Keekli, a children’s webzine and somehow managed to curate three anthologies of short stories for children. When doing nothing (which is never), she turns into a poem-reading, dramatic YouTube star on her channel Poetry Palooza. A Shimla girl at heart and a nomad in life, her current base is Kolkata. Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life is Sonia’s first book and hopefully not her last.

Always the odd one at home, Anisha Kotibhaskar is a maker at heart. She makes stories, art, and ample things to keep her daughter engaged. She has authored and illustrated a few children’s books and wants to make many more. If only real life could catch up with the ideas in her mind. When not writing stories, Anisha is busy creating artworks and exhibiting them. She also works as a freelance content writer. Currently on her plate are book illustration projects and the next story in the Mili & Gaja series.

Bazma Ahmad is a published illustrator, graphic designer, and animator. She earned her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Jamia Millia Islamia and her Master’s in Animation from Delhi College of Arts. When she’s not drawing, you’ll probably find her daydreaming about her next storybook adventure.
