In Conversation with Anvita Tekriwal

Anvita Tekriwal is an illustrator and visual designer from Kolkata, India. She loves experimenting with different styles and digital mediums and creating illustrations for various brands and children’s books. We spoke to her about her work on JADE AND THE HARMONY FLYERS, a Chapter Book by Vinita Agrawal.

How did you approach this project?

Sahana and Vinita Ma’am reached out to me with this wonderful story and a vision to create bright and vivid illustrations to depict all the scenes. After reading the manuscript, I knew I had to create some striking characters and exciting environments to do justice to such a meaningful read. We discussed each character in the story and how distinct each one’s personality is! It took only a few rounds of sketches and roughs for all of us to be aligned with our vision that helped me bring life to the story with my art.

What is your favourite type of design work?

I enjoy making illustrations the most, especially when it is for a younger audience.

What is your favourite design tech?

Some of my favourite methods to illustrate are on Procreate. It opens a wide range of possibilities to illustrate in different styles with the vast number of brushes and tools that it offers.

How do you adapt to new styles or techniques?

I learn by following other artists and designers on social media. Design blogs, journals, and websites are other ways I use to keep myself informed about the new features of software, updates in the design world, and different styles of illustrations that people are coming up with. One of my favourite websites is IT’S NICE THAT, that covers a large part of current affairs in the design and illustration realm.

A design book you would like to recommend?

A book I really enjoy reading and looking at is THE SHAPE OF IDEAS by Grant Snider.

What is your greatest career accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment so far is the network of designers and collaborators I have built over the past few years. I love working with new people who bring interesting projects to me, and even more when an old client-turned-friend comes back to me for another collaboration!
