In conversation with artist Monika Saroch, the author of FIFTY SHADES OF ART and THE BARE BONES BOOK OF CREATIVITY (forthcoming).
Tell us about THE BARE BONES BOOK OF CREATIVITY BY MONIKA SAROCH. What is it about?
The book is about enhancing creativity in children through some easy methods that do not require drawing skills.
Why is it different from other books?
Creativity is not about skill but imagination, and most of us get confused between the two. One can be extremely skilled yet lack creativity. The book focuses on developing out-of-the-box thinking instead of teaching how to draw or paint.
Why did you write this book?
There are many books on learning how to draw or paint. Schools also no longer focus much on art. This book aims to fill the gap between skill and creativity by enhancing the imagination of the reader in some really easy and interesting ways.
Tell us about your journey as an artist.
I have been painting professionally for the last twenty years, and I understand the difficulties that one faces when it comes to creating something. Having painted for institutions as well as individuals, creativity and imagination have been my biggest strengths. Important works include designing the Golden Jubilee trophy for a unit and creating the logo for the same, making art out of waste materials, and organising art fests and exhibitions.
Why does this book matter?
The book is really close to my heart as I want every child to be creative and imaginative while growing up and not lose those qualities in the pursuit of skill. Skill can be acquired anytime, while creativity and imagination have to be nurtured. This book can make it possible. It is simple to understand and aims to make creativity easy to comprehend and develop without the use of heavy words and technical terms.
Tell us three words that best describe you.
Creative, imaginative, and learner.
